When kitchen appliance manufacturer Ankarsrum was redesigning their packaging, they needed new images of their accessories. They turned to Animech to produce these images. Ankarsrum had previously relied on photographing all their products, and with that developed a visual language. So the challenge for us was to achieve the same look and feel, while trying to get consistent highlights, shadows, and reflections between a variety of different products.
When we made these images, we rendered them from the customers CAD models. The detail level of the CAD models meant we could use them pretty much as-is, with only some minor tweaks. So this project was all about materials, lighting, and post processing. We created the materials using a combination of procedural and tiling textures. Often we used composite maps that combined 5 or more maps in a single slot, to get the patterns just right. We also used subsurface scattering materials for some of the plastics, which took some tweaking to get looking correct. After rendering the images, they were post processed. We applied some grading, lens effects, and film emulation. We also had to do some compositing tricks to get shadows working properly with the alpha channel.
I was responsible for all the 3d work on this project. I used 3ds Max and V-Ray to render the images, and After Effects for post processing them. You can see the rendered images being used on Ankarsrum’s website, and on the retail packages at your nearest reseller.
